Why direct bookings matter
Every booking an online travel agency (OTA) sends you carries commission. A direct booking carries only your payment-gateway fee, and you keep the guest's contact details for next time.
A simple example: 100 room nights a month at USD 60, through a channel charging 18% commission (your contract rate will differ):
| Amount | |
|---|---|
| Room revenue | USD 6,000 |
| Commission at 18% | USD 1,080 |
| Saved by moving 25 of those room nights to direct | USD 270 a month, USD 3,240 a year (before gateway fees) |
Keep the OTAs
OTAs work like a billboard: many guests find you there and then look up your name. The goal is not to leave them, but to make sure that guests who already know you book with you.
Ten ways to win the direct booking
- Put a “Book now” button on every page of your website and on your Google Business Profile, linking straight to the booking page.
- Make booking fast on a phone: dates, room, guest details, pay. Several rooms should fit in one checkout.
- Show the same or a better deal than the OTAs for the same conditions, and check rate parity regularly so no channel undercuts you by mistake.
- Give a reason to book direct that respects your channel contracts: a promo code for returning guests, breakfast included, or more flexible cancellation.
- Offer the payment methods your guests actually use. In Bangladesh that often means bKash or Nagad alongside cards.
- Take a deposit that matches the risk — nothing, the first night, a percentage or a fixed amount — and use card holds for no-shows.
- Let guests cancel themselves up to a cut-off you set, so booking direct feels as safe as booking on an OTA.
- Send a branded confirmation straight away, with the payment link and how to reach you.
- Keep guest profiles and reward returning guests; loyalty points redeemed on the folio bring people back to you rather than to a search.
- At check-out, invite every OTA guest to book direct next time and tell them what they get for it.
Measure net revenue per channel
Compare channels on revenue after commission and cancellations, not on booking counts. A channel report showing revenue, cancellations and estimated commission per channel tells you what each sale is really worth, and whether your direct share is growing month by month.
How bedsKey helps
bedsKey includes a commission-free booking engine on your own domain with multi-room checkout, deposits and card holds through Stripe, bKash, Nagad, SSLCommerz and bank gateways, guest self-cancellation, promo codes and a hotel website builder. Direct bookings use the same path a clerk uses, so they can never collide with channel bookings, and the guest CRM keeps profiles, loyalty points and returning-guest history.
